if our planet were without its ocean but otherwise the same

if our planet were without its ocean, but otherwise the same as it is today, would surface temperatures be more extreme than they are now (that is, higher high temperatures in the summer, and lower low temperatures in winter), less extreme, about the same or what? why would you think that?

Solution

Ocean covers 71% of earth\'s surface and it constitutes about 97% of the earth\'s water.

Large bodies and ocean maintained earth\'s temperature so it remains relatively stable. Without ocean there would be higher high temperature in summer and lower low temperature in winter. For example in mars there is no larger bodies or ocean so its temperature varies by more than 200 degrees. Also without ocean rain will rarely occur and earth would turn into desert.

Ocean absorbs and distribute solar energy. Without ocean there will be no distribution of energy to the polar region specially during winter. So it will be extreme cold during winter without ocean.

Water is the main source of absorbing energy and ocean helps to regulate the temperature. So in the absence of ocean there would be either extreme hot or col temperature. Ocean also maintains the water cycle. The sun transfer heat to the equator and it turns into furnance without the circulation of ocean current. Also due to rise in temperature the atmosphere become less oxygenated and became unbreathable for humans even if they survive the extreme temperatures.
