Based on the histology of the epiphyseal (growth) plate explain the mechanism by which bone grows in length at the epiphyseal plate during childhood?
Solution
Long bones increase their length by addition of bone tissue and increase width at epiphyseal plate by a special type of growth called Appositional growth. Appositional growth occur by reabsorbtion of old bone and generation of new bone with that and increase the bone diameter. Epiphysial plate contain a cartilage generation zone called epiphysial zone, and the produced cartilage ossified at Hypophysial side. This process increase the bone length. This type of growth continues till adulthood and epiphysial plate converted into Epiphysial line.. Bones continue to increase its diameter, even after stop longitudinal growth.
