Histamine 2 blockers or H2 blockers reduces the amount of acid formed by the stomach and helps to relieve heart burn and other problems which may be caused due to acid reflux by the stomach. Usually these H2 blockers do not have any side effects and some of them are easily available as OTC(over the counter) drugs. But people with liver or kidney damage may have some side effects as these H2 blockers may build up in the bloodstream as the body will not be able to flux out these drugs properly. Also some H2 blockers contain aspartane which gets converted to phenylalanine in the body and should be used with caution in patients with phenylketonuria (PKU). Also as the acid in the stomach helps in destroying the pathogens which might enter into our body wirh the food we eat, decrease in this HCl caused by H2 blockers may increase certain infections and compromise the immune system of our body. Thus any of these H2 blockers should be prescribed or discussed with the doctor before being taken regularly.
