How should an organization decide on how \"cutting edge\" it should be in its IT acquisition strategy? Acquiring cutting edge IT might give it a competitive advantage, but at greater risk because the IT is cutting edge. On the other hand, the use of well-tested, mature IT that is also being used by many others reduces the risk, but it also may eliminate competitive advantage possibilities. How can the organization decide where along the continuum of very mature to cutting edge technology it belongs in its IT acquisition strategy?
Solution
If organizations provide a service in the dynamic market, such as providing services via Internet only. In these cases the cutting edge technology helps these organisations to show them unique compared to their competitors .These uniqueness will attract or get them lot of new customers and it will also help them to save or retain existing customers. Cutting edge technology has the potential of enabling a company to capture a large part of an undiscovered market and help them to show themselves as leaders in front of their customers.By doing all these things they are making the life difficult for their competetors. It will also take the compitetors large time to cope up .
risks of cutting edge
1)It has a less or short life time.Anytime approach may serve useless
2)It is prone to errors and maintenence is very difficult as technology will not be familiar.
3)If the tehnology fails or does not serve efficience, they may have to drop the idea and will result in loss of precious time and cost
4)most of the things here may be useless for future. It may not generate income if it is proved useless
organisation can decide by understanding and knowing how well it is doing in terms of its markets and customers, its competition ,technology, and stakeholder expectations. It must know how to manage risks and also in which areas it can take risk..
