Assume that the outside of a cell is grounded. If the membrane potential is +50 mV, what is (a) the potential on the outside of the membrane and (b) the potential on the inside of the membrane?
Solution
(a)Given that outside of the cell is grounded so,the potential on the outside of the membrane is 0volts.
(b)We know that the membrane potential is +50 mv,but we also know that membrane potential is equal to external potential minus internal potential. Thus, the potential on the inside of membrane is equal to -50 mv.
