 a) Desmond Freeman collects trading cards.  He has 432 baseball cards and 360 football cards. He wants to make stacks of cards on a table so that each stack contains the same number of cards and each card belongs to one stack.  If the baseball cards and football cards must not be mixed in the stacks, what is the largest number of cards that he can have in a stack?
b) The hottest temperature ever recorded in the United States was 134F, which occurred at Greenland Ranch, California, in Death Valley on July 10, 1913. The coldest temperature ever recorded in the United States was -80F, which occurred at Prospect Creek Camp, Alaska, in the Endicott Mountains on January 23, 1971. Determine the difference between these two temperatures.
c) The dimensions of the cover of a book have been increased from 8 ½ inches by 9 ¼ inches to 8 ½ inches by 10 ¼ inches. By how many square inches has the surface area increased? (Use area = length x width.)
Solution
a) Given Freeman has 432 baseball cards and 360 football cards.
Given to make stacks without mixing these two type of cards.
Also given each card belongs to one stack.
So we need to find the greatest common factor of both so that we can stack that number of cards from each type of card.
The greatest common factor here is 12.
So we stack 30 football cards each of 12 and 36 stacks of baseball cards having 12 each.
So the largest number of cards in a stack is 12.
b) The highest temperature given is 134oF and the least is -80oF
So the difference 134-(-80) which is 134+80
So the difference in temperature is 214oF
c) Given the initial dimensions are 8.5inch by 9.25inch. So the area is 8.5x9.25 which is 78.625 square inches
The new dimensions are 8.5inch by 10.25 inch. So the area is 8.5x10.25 is 87.125 square inches.
So the difference in area is 87.125-78.625 that is 8.5 square inches
