A sample of the paramagnetic salt to which the magnetization
A sample of the paramagnetic salt to which the magnetization curve of the figure applies is held at room temperature (330 K). At what applied magnetic field will the degree of magnetic saturation of the sample be 25% and 90%? Are these fields attainable in the laboratory? A magnetization curve for potassium chromium sulfate, a paramagnetic salt. The ratio of magnetization M of the salt to the maximum possible magnetization M_max is plotted versus the ratio of the applied magnetic field magnitude B_ext to the temperature T. Curie\'s law fits the data at the left: quantum theory fits all the data. After W. E. Henry.
Solution
From the graph, for the saturation to be 25%, B/T is about 0.25. B = 82.5 T. for 90% saturation, B = 907.5 T. No, attaining such high field for paramagnetic salt is very difficult.
