After an extrusion operation can the waste material be shred

After an extrusion operation, can the waste material be shredded into pellets and recycled to make more parts? Explain, and express any concerns and issues that should be considered for a specific operation.

Solution

No its not possible to recycle the waste products of extrusion process.Extrusion process involoves plastic deformations.Further extrusion will require more extrusin power and stronger dies.Waste material contains defects due to friction and non-homogeneous material flow. Further, temperature variations across the billet during hot extrusion can also lead to inhomogeneous deformation. Three types of defects are prominent in extrusion. They are: extrusion defect, surface cracks and internal cracks. If these materials are recycled the mechanical properties will be abrupt and failure criteria cant be predicted
