In honeybees, males are haploid (an unfertilized egg) while females are diploid (the result of fertilization through mating with a male honeybee). White eyes are recessive to the wild type brown eyes. What would be the results from the following matings. Indicate sex, genotype, phenotype, and ratios of all offspring (all F1 & F2 progeny). Females lay both fertilized and unfertilized eggs.
Female White eyed X brown eyed male
F1 female X F1 male (unfertilized egg from above female)
F2
Solution
since the female bee are diploid,
white eyed female would be: w w
brown eyed male would be : W
therefore the F1 generation :
therefore the f1 female bee would be Ww, that is brown eyed
and the f1 male bee would be w, that is white eyed
now we need to cross a F1 female Ww, with a F1 male w,
therefore the F2 females could be Ww or ww meaning brown or white eyed
and F2 males could be W or w meaning brown or white eyed.
| w | w | |
| W | Ww | Ww |
| W | Ww | Ww |
