Fill in the table below comparing and contrasting the three

Fill in the table below comparing and contrasting the three domains of life based on any three chosen cell structures. You are using a microscope with a 10X/0.25, 25X/0.50, 45X/0.80 and 90X/1.30 objective lenses and a 10X ocular lens (these are listed as magnification/numerical aperture). The condenser numerical aperture is 1.5. The wavelength of light being used is 750nm. What is the lowest magnification that will allow you to see two cells as separate that are 400nm apart? Write the equation(s) you will use, fill them in and then answer. Draw and label all parts of a Gram (+) cell wall and a Gram (-) cell wall.

Solution

Cell characteristics Bacteria Archaea Eukaryota 1. Cell wall made up of peptidoglycan Does not contain peptidoglycan If present made up of polysaccharide such as cellulose (plants) or chitin (Fungi) 2. Cell Size Measures usually from 0.5 to 5 microns, but some may be as large upto one milimetre. Smaller than bacteria measuring 0.5 upto 4 microns They measure large in size as compared both to bacteria and archaea. 3. Cell organelles Membrane bound organelles are absent. Ribosomes 70s. Membraane bound organelles absent. Ribosomes 70s but of different shape than that of bacteria Membrane bound organelles present. Both 70S and 80S ribosomes present.
Fill in the table below comparing and contrasting the three domains of life based on any three chosen cell structures. You are using a microscope with a 10X/0.
