Clarify as to how connective tissues arre classified in to both categories & sub-categories
Solution
Connective tissue is the most profuse and widely scattered tissue found in the human body. The primary function of connective tissue is to protect, support, and bind together different parts of the body.
It is made up of cells and extracellular matrix. The extracellular matrix is secreted from the cells and made up of fibres filled with protein and polysaccharide matrix
Connective tissue may be classified based on the composition of the extracellular matrix. This extracellular matrix is secreted from the cells, mainly composed of ground substance (interstitial fluid, cell adhesion proteins and proteoglycans) and fibres (collagen, elastic and reticular).
Connective tissue is further divided into 4 types,
1. Loose connective tissue
i. Areolar
ii. Adipose
iii. Reticular
2. Dense connective tissue
i. Dense regular
ii. Dense irregular
iii. Elastic
3. Cartilage
i. Hyaline
ii. Elastic
iii. Fibrocartilage
4. Bone
5. Blood
Note: Both Loose connective tissue and Dense connective tissue can be grouped under connective tissue proper.
