The vertebrae of the vertebral column are one of the defining characteristics that differentiates the vertebrates from the other members of the animal kingdom. In the frogs, as evident from dissection studies, there are 9 interlocking vertebrae in the vertebral column, but no ribs are attached as opposed to humans.
