A 2x6 Douglas Fir timber columns is shown below. The length of the column is 15 ft. The allowable compressive stress is 1200 psi. Compute: a) The maximum load that can be applied for a factor of safety of 2.5. 4. P ? TABLE E.1 U.S. Customary units s, in. Nominal Size in. Dressed Size in 3.06 146 83 229 109302 5.36 208 476 525 2×4 7.56 x 5 13.1 x8 Solution:

Solution

allowable compressive stress = 1200psi

maximum or ultimate compressive stress = 1200*F.O.S = 1200*2.5 = 3000psi

maximum or ultimate load = ultimate stress* area of column=3000*(8.25)=25.5kip

maximum load on the column should be less than(<) 25.5kip.

so, self weight of the column is 2.29 lb/ft (choosen from given table)

for 15ft column = 15*2.29 = 34.35lb

so maximum load that can be applied is 25.5kip - 34.35 lb = 25.4kip

A 2x6 Douglas Fir timber columns is shown below. The length of the column is 15 ft. The allowable compressive stress is 1200 psi. Compute: a) The maximum load
