a) Circuit in first image is as Low pass filter because

,output voltage is taken across capacitor ,capacitor acts as a open circuit (High impedances) for low frequencies hence Vin=Vout which passes low frequency signals

where as for high frequencies it acts as short circuit(Low impedance ) Vout =0 V or attenuates high frequency signals,Hence this circuit is as low pass filter

Impedance of capacitor is =Zc=jXc=j/wC =j/(2pi*FC) inversely proportional to frequency

b) Where as circuit in second image is High pass Filter as output is taken across resistor and capacitor is connceted in series ,explanation in above problem gives the reason i.e Capacitor acts as short circuit for High frequencies give Vout=Vin for high frequencies for this circuit as capacitor in series

for low frequencies capacitor acts as open circuit gives Vout =0 V
