An RLC circuit consists of a 149 ohm resistor, a 28 muF capacitor, and a 898 mH inductor, connected in series with a 167 V, 75 Hz power supply. What is the phase angle between the current and the applied voltage? Answer between -180 degree and +180degree. Answer in units of degree.

Solution

f = 75 Hz

Reactance of inductor, XL = 2 pi f L = 2 x pi x 75 x 0.898

XL = 423.17 ohm

Reactance due to capacitor, Xc = 1 / (2 pi f C )

         = 1 / (2 x pi x 28 x 10^-6 x 75 ) = 75.8 ohm

phase angle, @ = tan^-1 [( XL - XC) / R ]

@ = tan^-1 [ ( 423.17 - 75.8 ) / 149 ] = 66.78 deg
