Two trains were traveling in opposite directions moving away
Two trains were traveling in opposite directions, moving away from one another. One train was moving at 5 miles per hour. The other train was moving at 6 miles per hour. They were 5 miles apart to begin with. After two hours, how far apart were they?
Solution
You need the distance formula. d=rt
 Train A = 5 miles/h
 Train B = 6 miles/h
 <--Train A at 5m/h for 2 h-----|--5 miles---|-----Train B at 6m/h for 2 h----->
 So, the total distance is:
 Distance of train A + 5 miles + Distance of train B = Total distance
 (5*2)+5+(6*2) = x
 10+5+12=x
 x=27
 After two hours they are 27 miles apart.
