let amount of one variety of birdseed be x ,amount of another variety of birdseed be y

given total Ten pounds of mixed birdseed

x+y =10

y=10-x------------->(1)

given one variety priced at $5.71 per pound and the other at $8.81 per pound and mixed birdseed sells for $6.33 per pound

5.71x+8.81y=6.33*10

5.71x+8.81y=63.3--------->(2)

substitute (1) in(2)

5.71x+8.81(10-x)=63.3

5.71x+88.1-8.81x=63.3

(8.81-5.71)x=(88.1-63.3)

x=(88.1-63.3)/(8.81-5.71)

x=8

y=10-x

y=10-8

y=2
