A can of soft drink at room temperature is put into the refrigerator so that it will cool. Would you model the can of soft drink as a closed system or an open system? Explain. Portable electric heaters are commonly used to heat small rooms. Explain the energy transformation involved during this heating process. How are heat, internal energy, and thermal energy related to each other? What is the difference between intensive and extensive properties? For a system to be in thermodynamic equilibrium, do the temperature and the pressure have to be the same everywhere?

Solution

1) I will model can as closed system. Here I want to cool the soft drink so, I allowed soft drink to heat change but there is no need to change the quantity of soft drink. It is better to design as closed system which allows only heat transfer.

2) An electric heater is an electrical device that converts electric current to heat. The heating element inside every electric heater is an electrical resistor, and works on the principle of Joule heating, an electric current passing through a resistor will convert that electrical energy into heat energy.

3) Heat :A form of energy associated with the motion of atoms or molecules and capable of being transmitted throughsolid and fluid media by conduction, through fluid media by convection, and through empty space by radiation. The transfer of energy from one body to another as a result of a difference in temperature or a change inphase.

Internal energy cannot be transferred. whereas, thermal energy is the energy due to temperature difference. a body at high temperature posses more thermal energyand its energy can be transferred to a body with relatively low temp. thermal energyis also responsible for increasing the motion or vibration of particles.

4) Intensive property is the propery of matter that is independent of the quantity of the substance

eg : density,specific gravity, temerature

Extensive property is the property of matter that is dependent of the quantity of the substance

eg : mass, volume

5) For thermodynamic equilibrium the tempertuare at every point on the body should be same.
