A similar apparatus to the one in the last question has a gap between the two cylinders filled with a rubber of a shear modulus of 5X10^5 Pa. The inner cylinder is rotated from the rest position through an angle of 0.05 radians. What is the torque on the outer cylinder?

Previous Question reffered to in problem (does not need answer):

A simple visometer consists of two concentric cylinders, each of length 100 mm. The inner cylinder with radius 95 mm, rotates at an angular velocity of 5 rad s^-1, while the outer one with radius 100 mm, is fixed. The viscometer is filled with an oil, whose viscosity is 10 poise. What torque is measured on the outer cylinder? (Answer was 6 N*m).

Solution

shear modulous= torque/(area x displacement) = torque /( pi x 0.095^2x0.1x0.25)

so, torque= 5 x 10^5 x 3.141 x 0.095 x 0.095 x 0.1 x 0.25 x 10^-3 = 0.354 N.m
