Give an example of what would these abnormal cell counts would cause in HUMANS:
(1) HIGH RBC
(2) HIGH WBC
(3) LOW RBC
(4) LOW WBC
Solution
Polycythemia is a disorder where levels of RBC increase in blood stream. In this case, hematocrit value (volume of RBC) and haemoglobin concentrations (oxygen carrying enzyme) increase.
Polycythemia may be sometimes arisen due to hypoxia condition. Erythropoietin secretion upregulates to increase RBC level to compensate oxygen levels.
A high WBC count indicates increased immune response. WBC are produced in response to any infection. When any allergy or infection increases, WBC production increases.
Low RBC count indicates bone marrow failure or erythropoietin deficiency. This may lead to anemia, hemolysis or RBC destruction.
Low WBC counts are linked to bone marrow disorders to make WBC. Autoimmune diseases that target WBC may also lead to decreased WBC counts. Chemotherapy may also decrease WBC counts.
