Why do you think so little class time in high school biology
Why do you think so little class time in high school biology is devoted to the subject of evolution?
Solution
Evolution is a revolutionary subject. It challenges the assumptions we have about the world and the evolution of the human society in general.
Most religions consider man to be the “epitome of creation”. The revealed religions considered the world to be created by a being with supreme intelligence and powers. They also make a special consideration for man and consider man to be the most supreme and the lord and master above all life forms on earth.
When you look at things from an evolutionary perspective, you find that man is only one among millions of species on this planet. There is nothing special about man. Evolution has made man what he is today. Evolution in the future may lead to an organism with far better capabilities than man. Period.
However, how do we as a human species reconcile with what has been taught to be the truth told by the various religions to what we now know scientifically? In the natural order of things, there is no role for God in the creation of the world. This has led to a lot of opposition to the teaching of evolution, especially to the teaching of evolution to young children. There is a fear that by learning about evolution, these young children as they grow up will learn to deny the existence of a God or any God for that matter.
All these have led to a minimal teaching of evolution in classrooms the world over.
