How does gene cloning produce many copies of a gene? Describe in a few sentences.
Solution
Answer : During gene cloning a gene of interest is inserted into the vectors such as plasmids followed by transformation of these plasmids into the E coli. Once inside the host cells cloned gene undergoes replication along with the plasmid DNA giving rise to many copies.
Cloning vectors used for the generation of multiple copies of a particular gene. Cloning vectors consists of origin of replication, selectable marker such as ampicillin resistance genes and multiple cloning sites.Examples of cloning vectors: plasmids (PBR322 and PUC18), lambda phage, BACs, YACs etc.,
