I have an I beam simply supported and loaded as shown below, a gage mounted on the top of the beam. does the load act on the top of the beam so that there will be a normal stress in the y-axis or not to predict the strain in the gage.?

Solution

As the load is applied on the bottom side of the beam, that will not produce any normal stress along Y-axis whrease there will be a tension on uppe side.
