The image to the left is has been 2-D filtered to create the image to the right, where the colar white represents a higher value than the color black. Was the filter a low pass or a high pass filter? Explain your answer.

Solution

It is a high pass filter. Generally the method used to high pass the signal is to low pass it, then invert and mix it with the original signal. What actually happens in it is that the the low frequency signals that are opposite cancel each other while the high frequency ones remain.
