Using x hours of skilled labor and y hours of unskilled labo

Using x hours of skilled labor and y hours of unskilled labor, a manufacturer can produce Q(x,y) = 100 x y^(1/2) units each week. Currently 40 hours of skilled labor and 25 hours of unskilled labor are being used. Suppose the manufacturer reduces the skilled labor level by 2 hours and increases the unskilled labor by 4. Use calculus to determine the approximate effect of these changes on production.

Production changes by approximately units

Solution

Change in Q = Q/x * (-2) + Q/y * (+4) = -200 y^(1/2) + 50 x y^(-1/2) * 4 = -600

Hence, the producttoin reduces b 600 units a week approximately
