Solve and verify your answer. See Example 2. (Objective 1) A homeowner estimates that it will take 11 days to roof his house. A professional roofer estimates that he could roof the house in 6 days. How long will it take if the homeowner helps the roofer?

Solution

part of roof done by homeowner in 1 day = 1/11
part of roof done by professional in 1 day = 1/6

In 1 day if both work together,
part completed = 1/11 + 1/6
= (6+11) /66
= 17 /66

Number of days they take if they work together = 66/17 = 3.88 days

Answer: 3.88 days
