1- Discuss two benefits of implementing one-piece flow; for each benefit, explain if/how it helps achieve the QCD (refer to goals of implementing lean practices.
2- Designing the manufacturing system to handle fluctuations in demand is important to enable one-piece flow. Discuss one strategy that could be used to design a manufacturing system to cope with fluctuations in demand
3- To achieve one-piece flow it is necessary to make sure that cycle times at work cells and work stations connected are comparable and also that they are less than the takt time. A variety of steps can be followed to reduce the production cycle time in work cells and improve operations in work stations.
A- Describe two strategies that can be used to reduce production cycle time at work stations and how they help?
B- Describe three different practices that can be used to improve operations at work stations and how they help?
Solution
answer- 1
a ) Improves Quality. In one piece flow defects are detected immediately (usually the next work station) forcing immediate corrective action.
In contrast, when material are produced in batches, piles of rejection may result when a defect is detected downstream. Because the entire batch may have the same defect.
b) Improves Flexibility. Flow of one piece is faster than batch or queue. This speediness factor allows to wait longer to schedule the order (and still deliver on time).
Subsequently, better response to last minutes changes from the customer is possible.
Reduces inventory. With one piece flow, work in process (WIP) is reduced in considerably. This reduces cost as there is no need to move, store, and manage piles of inventory
