Sheep foot rollers are more effective in compacting fine grain soils especially clays.

These sheep foot rollers consist of steel drums with projecting lugs. These Lugs give more pressure on clays. Compaction is done based on the pressure apply on the clays. Other vibrators or other rollers are found inefficient on clays as particles on clays are tightly packed with each other. So, we need more pressure. Lugs are having less area apllies more load on the soil hence give more pressure and get compacted easily.
