8. Determine the concentration of CO 300m downwind of a busy highway. The highway at an average speed of 45 miles/hours. A 4 m/s wind blows carries 3200 cars/hour perpendicular to the road. The atmospheric stability is class B. Note that light duty gasoline vehicles have an average emission factor of 3.8g CO/mile. List your assumptions. 15 points

Solution

Let us consider we are calculating the amount of pollutants for 300 m of a busy highway

Number of vehicles=3200 cars/hour

Velocity of vehicle=45 miles per hour

wind velocity= 4m/sec

Atmospheric stability=Class B

Atmoshperic stability of class B means its unstable environment and the pollution level may be dispersed due to the wind flowing

Concentration of CO for 300m or 0.186 miles:

3.8x45x3200

=547200 gm

=547.2 kgx0.18=101.77 kg for 0.186 miles

 8. Determine the concentration of CO 300m downwind of a busy highway. The highway at an average speed of 45 miles/hours. A 4 m/s wind blows carries 3200 cars/h
