Chi square is used to compare the expected result to observed result. Here data for observed frequencies should be random and it should be a random sample from the large population of indepedent variables. For example: Tossing a coin 1000 times. Observed frequency of head may be 650 while expected is 500. Or in a candy packet there are 50 candies of 2 colors. Both colors are equally likely. So expected frquencies are 25 and 25. While observed frequencies can be 30 and 20. In the Chi-square, the null hypothesis is that the expected is equal to observed frequncies.
