7. It has been 6 weeks since the start of the Elavil, and Mr. Matlock decides to restart his BP and Cholesterol medications. Should he be kept on the Elavil? Explain your answer.

Solution

Mr. Matlock should consult his doctor regarding elavil (amytrptyline) and the BP and cholesterol medicines. He might have to discontinue elavil if he is on certain BP medicines (antihypertensives) as they can have interaction among themselves and have adverse effects.

Some antihypertensives such as clonidine and labetol interacts with elavil and increases amytrytline levels in the blood. This increased blood levels would result in side effects being increased.
