Explain how the modifications to the histone tails influence

Explain how the modifications to the histone tails influence gene regulation: modifications, opening, and closing.

Solution

Histone tail is positively charged because it is rich in arginine and lysine. DNA is a negatively charged macromolecule hence it is compactly packed within the histone due to positive negative interaction.Acetylation , deacetylation and methylation are the modicfications which can be done to the histone tail and which influences the gene regulation. In acetylation acetyl group is transferred in other words it provides negative chgarge to the tail hence the DNA is relaxed and the gene present can be trancribe. It is done by the enzyme histone acetyltranferase. Its reverse is done by deacetylation.

In methylation ,methyl group is transferred which provide positiove charge which results in more tightly binding of DNA and histone as a result of which genes are hidden and not transcribe.
