The First Jet Passenger Plane
What was the cause of the de Havilland Comet crashes and what was the resolution to this problem?
Solution
The de Havilland comet was the first commercial jet airline came into service in 1952. The first flight was from London to Johannesburg with passenger. It was design to fly in high altitude but unfortunately within year it crashed two of its plane.
Square windows led to cracking of the fuselage, due to stress at the corners. The reason was steel frame was broken in mid air and all this happened only because of its design which was square window and square framework can’t handle heavy pressure and it cause about 56 passenger’s life.
After various research it was confirmed that all the crashes happened only because of its design specially window.
Because of square window the pressurization of cabin resulted in stress in plane and due to pressurization and depressurization during flight resulted small crack around the edge of the plane.
The resolution to this problem is only to change square window into round (oval) window.
