The 2 for 1 rule states that for each hour a student spends in the classroom, a student should spend another 2-3 hours preparing for class. 1) How do you interpret this rule? 2) Describe your schedule in as much or as little detail as you see fit. 3) How do you balance school/work/family/travel/ exercise/social/etc? The 2 fo 1 rule is a rule for more preparedness for the class, which is generally the case when the classes are based on discussion, or case studies.

Here all the knowledge and basic research are done prior to the class, and in the class only the application is done. This is effective when all the participants are engaged, motivated and ready to learn. There is more preparedness before the class, hence the knowledge levels are much more when collectively taken up and the discussions are very fruitful.

I have 3- 4 hours of classes daily, and as per the rule I need to have 6 to 8 hours of pre-preparation. Which means if I take out my daily hours of regular activity of around 8 hours and the 4 hours of class, I have just enough hours to be prepared, and if there are more assignments, then I will have to take out time from the regular activity hours.

So, I have to give less time to sleep which is generally 7 hours and not waste any time in watching sports and on social networks, which generally consumes my 1 to 1.5 hours. Rest all can be fit in very well to my work life. I work on weekends, and on those days I will have to offload few of my assignments. So this is how I will have to adapt to suit to the 2 for 1 rule.

It has been working fine as per the weekdays, school and learning with reduced other activities on these days and on working weekends, I have more sleep, assignments and part time work.

Overall the rest time has reduced and so has social time, to accomodate the learning by the 2 for 1 rule.

The 2 for 1 rule is all preparation, how well and efficiently the information can be accessed is the key.

One great learning I have got is to share the load, read the articles prescribed and share notes with fellow mates.

So in this way if there are 2-3 readings, we divide it amon ourself, then the key points are shared, notes taken and basic story telling occurs, so the time is saved on reading and the information is quickly gained and a lot of time is saved.

So sharing the readings which are not very essential and then disseminating the information is the key.
