What are the likely failure modes of a high performance auto
Solution
There are three major causes of high performance engine failure. They are:
Overheating: This is the one of major cause of engine failure. Overheating itself can be caused by various reasons. The most common is the coolant loss, due to which the heat in the engine will goes onincreasing & hence cause the engine failure. Overheating also causes the metal to expand & creating more stress among the engine element causing the valve stems to gall and stick and pistons to scuff and seize. Being made of aluminium and due to higher coefficient of thermal expansion, overheating also cause cylinder head to swell wrap and crack. Overheating of an engine also causes pre-ignition which further results in the engine failure.
Lack of Lubrication: Lubrication plays a vital role in proper functioning of engine. The most common failure of engine is due to lubrication only. The friction force between the engine element in absence of lubrication will be higher which causes the stress to develop, creating scratches on the super finished surfaces and uneven forces to develop can cause the engine failure.
Knocking/detonation: Detonation or knocking is a form of abnormal combustion that results from too much heat and pressure in the combustion chamber. The fuel ignites spontaneously causing a sudden rise in cylinder pressure. The result is a sharp hammer-like blow on the piston that produces a metallic knocking or pinging noise. Prolonged detonation can crack rings, pound out piston ring grooves, punch holes through the tops of pistons, smash rod bearings and blow head gaskets.
