You are the new safety director The CEO says to you We haven
You are the new safety director. The CEO says to you “We haven’t had an accident here in 20 years so we are doing things right. Why do I need to spend more money on a so called proactive Safety Management System?” How do you address this reasonable question from the boss?
Solution
Ans:-
Dear Mr. CEO,
First of all, I would like to thank you for the opportunity of having me on board in this company;I really do appreciate it very much. But as the new safety director in this company, it is my dutyto outline certain issues that I have recognized that might be of concern regarding the safetyaspect in this company. It is a huge accomplishment for our company to have a safety record ofzero accidents in the past 20 years. However, the aviation industry is changing every single dayand this ever changing nature of the industry will require us to have a relatively proactive SafetyManagement System in order to assure safety is being enforced and has the highest standard
Often we take for granted the things in life that we should be truly appreciative of, and sometimes it’s an abrupt realisation of maybe losing them that makes us take notice. At Procon, we start training sessions by asking people what makes them tick, what drives them. Almost across the board people reply that it’s their family, their friends, and their interests at home. We aim to protect peoples’ enjoyment of these things by ensuring workers are safe at work. Safety at work means we, and those people we care about most, can enjoy all the things in life we treasure and appreciate.
Proactive safety management is all about keeping ahead of the game, resolving any issues before an incident or an accident occurs. In the short term, proactive safety management can seem more expensive. You are putting in place (and spending money) on health and safety before any safety or health issues may have developed.
Proactive safety inspections, regular auditing, ongoing training, near miss reporting and active supervision will all form part of a proactive safety management structure.
The benefits of a proactive safety management system include fostering a positive safety culture, helping to prevent accidents from occurring, and improving the health and safety of everyone on site.
