1) sustainable development goals (SDGs)
what?
The Sustainable Development goals are officially known as Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These are a set of 17 aspirational goals with 169 targets between them. The goals are contained in paragraph 54 United Nations Resolution A/RES/70/1 of 25 September, 2015. Following is the list of the 17 goals:
1) no poverty 2) zero hunger 3) good health and well-being 4) quality education 5) gender equality 6) clean water and sanitation 7) affordable and clean energy 8) decent work and economic growth 9) industry, innovation and infrastructure 10) reduced inequalities 11) sustainable cities and communities 12) responsible consumption and production 13) climate action 14) life below water 15) life on land 16) peace, justice and strong institutions 17) partnerships for the goals 18)
when?
the history of SDGs date back to 1972 when nations met in Sweden for the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment.then in 1983, the UN decided to create the World Commission on Environment and Development which defined the term Sustainable Development as \"meeting the need of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs\". in 1992, the first United Nations Conference on Environment and Development was held in Rio where first agenda for Environment and Development, known as Agenda 21, was developed and adopted.
In 2000, Paragraph 246 (\"We recognize that the development of goals could also be useful for pursuing focused and coherent action on sustainable development. The goals should address and incorporate in a balanced way all three dimensions of sustainable development (environment, economics, and society) and their interlinkages. The development of these goals should not divert focus or effort from the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals\") and 249 (\"the process needs to be coordinated and coherent with the processes to consider the post-2015 development agenda\") of the United Nations were brought together that led to the formulation of Millenium Development Goals (MDGs).
why?
SDGs have been adopted with the purpose to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all.
how?
in order to reach the goals, governments, private sector, and the common people need to play their roles.
Some actions for achieving SDGs that can be easily performed by all the individuals while sitting on their couch, being at home or even when outdoors are as follows:
doing online research and purchasing equipments only from the companies that implement sustainable practices and don\'t harm the environment.
saving electricity by plugging appliances into a power strip and turning them off completely, eg. computers should be shut down rather than putting them on sleep as they consume the same energy while on sleep as that of while on.
by sharing any interesting social media post about women\'s rights or climate change to create awareness at a wider scale.
taking shorter showers of 5-10 minutes rather than longer ones or bath-tub baths that require and waste a lot of water.
recycling paper, glass, aluminium and plastic to prevent the waste and landfills from increasing.
using reusable water bottles and coffee mugs to help cut down waste and also saving money.
preferring to walk for short distances and using more of public transport and using cars for bigger trips.
 MDGs
what?
MDGs were the eighth international development goals for the year 2015. 189 UN members and about 22 international organizations made a resolution to help achieve the following 8 goals by 2015.
To eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
 To achieve universal primary education
To promote gender equality and empower women
 To reduce child mortality
 To improve maternal health
To combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
 To ensure environmental sustainability
To develop a global partnership for development
 when?
In 2000 , Paragraph 246 (\"We recognize that the development of goals could also be useful for pursuing focused and coherent action on sustainable development. The goals should address and incorporate in a balanced way all three dimensions of sustainable development (environment, economics, and society) and their interlinkages. The development of these goals should not divert focus or effort from the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals\") and 249 (\"the process needs to be coordinated and coherent with the processes to consider the post-2015 development agenda\") of the United Nations were brought together that led to the formulation of Millenium Development Goals (MDGs).
why?
the aim behind formulation of the MDGs was to address extreme poverty in its many forms along with promoting gender equality, education and environmental sustainability.
how?
MDGs were designed to be achieved by the following:
primary support of the national leaders
 revitalizing the politics
participation of serious investors in the long run
creating wareness at global level and teemng up with donors for the cause.
 2) differences between SDGs and MDGs:
SDGs focus at eradicating poverty whereas MDGs aim at getting rid of the extreme poverty that exists in several dimensions.
SDGs impress the need of all the different sectors (government, private companies an indiviuals) for coming together but MDGs stress more on the role of the national leaders.
SDGs include many goals in its Agenda (17) while MDGs are limited only to 8.
MDGs only focus on ensuring universal education whereas SDGs strive for the provision of quality education.
SDGs aim at the good health and overall well-being of the individuals while MDGs emphasize more on the prevention of diseases like HIV/AIDS and malaria.
It is deduced that SDGs have a wider picture and range of goals to focus and take care of while MDGs have a limited number of goals and focus on particular aims rather than on general ones.
SDGs take in their purview the concerns for animals (both water and land) along with that of humans while MDGs have only human-oriented approach.
SDGs lay emphsis on social indicators like peace, equality and justice whereas MDGs keep them out of their orbit.
 3) The causes
poverty - poverty is emphasized by both SDGs and MDGs and instrumental in definining the MDGs. It has however also become a hurdle in the path of SDGs and MDGs. As many countries are too poor to help themselves so lack of financial resources continue to be a problem which has not helped the poor countries to et rid of poverty. If even the countries resort to debt then they are trapped in the debt ultimately being poor with impoverished population.
lack of education - it was another important reason for formulating SDGs and MDGs but owing to the meagre finncial resources and inefficiency of government and individuals it has become an obstacle in realizing the objectives. as people are uneducated and unaware of the importance of the education so they fail to understand the importance of the education and the problem of a higher population of the world persists.
 4) dear candidate, it has to be your own answer. the lists have been mentioned for both. whichever two areas you feel should be considered you should mention them.
5) merley spending trillions of dollars is noot sufficient. Governments, individuals and private sector companies need to understand their role. Awareness needs to be spread among all to facilitate the achievement of these objective by collaborative efforts of all the sectors. Proper planning needs to be done to realize these goals and curb all the loopholes and financial funds need to be allocated on the priority basis by identifying the important areas and then moving to less important ones
