The confectioner makes boxes of candy in two sizes. The small box contains 9 pieces of candy. The large box contains 15 pieces of candy. If she made 1152 pieces of candy for a total of 100 boxes, how many of each box did she make? Include an explanation of how you solved this problem.

Solution

Let assume she made x no. of small boxes and y nos. of large boxes.

So, x +y = 100 ----(1)

Candy : 9x +15y = 1152 ---(2)

solve the equations to get (x , y)

multiply equation 1 by 9 and subtract from equation 1:

9x +9y = 900

9x+ 15y = 1152

-------------(-)

-6y = -252 ; y = 42

x = 58

Solution : ( x , y) = ( 58 , 42)

The confectioner makes boxes of candy in two sizes. The small box contains 9 pieces of candy. The large box contains 15 pieces of candy. If she made 1152 pieces
