Use of special concrete mixes such as steel fibre reinforced

Use of special concrete mixes such as steel fibre reinforced concrete and geopolymer concrete have advantages over conventional concrete in certain practical applications. Ilustrate 2 practical situations (for each type of mix) where fibre reinforced concrete or geopolymer concrete can be used with considerable advantages.

Solution

Steel fibre reinforced concrete has various applications and one of them is in the construction of \"airport pavements\". Steel fibre reinforced concrete is considered as a material of improved properties and not as normal reinforced concrete concrete where reinforcement is provided for local strengthening of concrete in tension region.Since in steel fibre reinforced concrete fibres are distributed uniformly in concrete it has better properties to resist internal stresses due to shrinkage. Following are some of the properties of steel fibre reinforced concrete over conventional concrete:

1. Flexural strength: Flexural bending stress can be increased upto 3 times more than normal concrete.

2. Fatigue resistance: Almost 1.5 times increase in fatigue strength.

3. Impact resistance: Greater resistance to damage in case of heavy impact.

Other practical situations where steel fibre reinforced concrete is used are: tunnel linings, slabs, base platform for raingauges etc.

GEOPOLYMER CONCRETE: An environment friendly concrete also called as Green concrete which use less energy in its production and produces less carbon dioxide than the conventional concrete is called as Geopolymer concrete. Utilization of fly ash as replacement of cement or as a admixture saves cement and produces less carbon dioxide.

It is used for the construction of slabs and also in the construction of bridges because of its following advantages:

1. Reduces the dead load on the structure.

2. Reduces the emission of carbon dioxide by 30%.

3. Good thermal and fire resistor.

4. No enviromental pollution and sustainable development.

5. Flexural strength is almost same as conventional concrete.
