Within the context of the Fick equation, why does EPO administration and/or blood reinfusion increase O2 transport to the muscles?
Solution
Erythropoietins a glycoprotein hormone that controls erythropoiesis, or red blood cell (RBC) production.RBC contain haemoglobin which carries oxygen to the tissue. If EPO is administered from outside of the body it stimulates the production of RBC by red bone marrow cell. As a result oxygen carrying capacity of the blood enhances.
According to the Fick principle the total uptake of) a substance by the peripheral tissues is equal to the product of the blood flow to the peripheral tissues. That means if the total uptake of EPO from peripheral tissue increases, the product of the blood flow to the peripheral tissues also increases. As a result O2 transport to muscle also increases.
Blood reinfusion means infusion of blood that has previously been withdrawn from the same individual. Like the above process blood reinfusion also increases the volume of blood of that individual.
So, according to the Fick principle uptake of blood from peripheral tissue increase the blood flow to the peripheral tissue. As a result O2 transport to muscle also increases.
