Each individual in the class should propose 3 different ideas for a mechanism design project. The mechanism must have at least five links and one dosed-loop. At this stage, you do not need to describe the mechanism, rather you must describe your ideas for three different problems that could be solved by a mechanism. You must state who the mechanism helps, what their problem is and how your mechanism will solve the problem: Example: Idea #1 Musicians need both hands to play their instruments and need another \"hand\" to turn the pages of their music. I will build a foot-operated mechanism that turns music book pages. Idea #2 Most boats leak some, and boat owners need pumps to get rid of bilge water. I will build a wind-powered pump that will operate even if the boat owner is not on the boat. Idea #3 In social gatherings, it is often expected to provide guests with beverages, yet some hosts would rather be talking to the guests rather than serving. I will build a mechanism that will automatically move cups under a tap, fill the cups, and move the cups along the serving table.

Solution

Idea # 1:

A car with a manually operated gearbox , needs the driver to operate the clutch, the accelerator, the steering as well the gear stick. New drivers or someone with a physical disability might find this quite difficult. I will design a button operated arm that can be attached to the gear stick to change the gears. The buttons can be placed on the steering to control the gear stick. this will eliminate the use of the clutch pedal as well as the gear stick by the driver. and make it easier to drive the car.

Idea # 2:

There might be a situation where, you want to be somewhere presentable after a long walk through the feilds. A shoe cleaner can come in handy in such cases. I could design a portable, motor operated hand-held shoe cleaner. The rotary head of the cleaner can have different brush attachments according to shoe type. It may even have a little resevoir of soapy water to be sprayed as and when required.

Idea # 3:

Frozen / Icy car windsheilds can be a nuisance, if you need to scrape off the ice everyday throughout the winter. It can eat up a lot of your time from your morning routine I can design an attachment that can go over the windsheild with a reciprocating arm that can do the scrapping. It might even have a heating element to help the ice melt.
