Herzberg\'s two-factor theory of motivation states that employees have two sets of needs in the workplace - hygiene factors and motivator factors. Hygiene factors are satisfiers and includes factors like salary, working conditions etc. Motivators includes factors like awards and recognition, opportunity for progression etc.

Maslow\'s hierarchy of needs portrayed needs of individuals in the form of a pyramid with several stages of needs.

Both these theories are related to a nation\'s culture because the type of motivation that each and every person is motored by changes with experiences of life as well as the culture of the nation in which that individual resides. In developed countries like USA and Japan, there is a prevailing culture of career progression and growth. Thus an individual in these countries will be more motivated by the prospects of advancement in their professional life. In developing countries like Brazil or India, there is a culture of mediocrity and people are more bothered about the pay. Thus pay package and fringe benefits are the key motivators in developing countries
