Using the results of statistical mechanics compute the chang

Using the results of statistical mechanics, compute the change in entropy when one mole of monoatomic ideal gas is compressed from an initial condition at 273 K and 1 atm to a final condition of 500 K and 3.5 atm.

Solution

Change in Entropy , S = nCp.ln( T / T0 ) - nR.ln( P / P0 )

n = 1 , Cp = 2.5R , T = 500 K , T0 = 273 K , P = 3.5 atm , P0 = 1 atm, R = 8.33 J K1 mol1

=> S = nCp.ln( T / T0 ) - nR.ln( P / P0 )

=> S = 2.5R.ln( 500 / 273 ) - R.ln( 3.5 / 1 )

=> S = 2.16731 J.K-1
