A gas is confined to a cylinder by a piston. The gas has an initial pressure of 102 kPa and a volume of 96 cm^3. The piston is slowly moved back until the gas\'s volume has increased by 0.3 %. Whas is the approximate work (in Joules) that flows into or out of our gas? (Be sure to give the correct sign as well as the correct magnitude. You can consider this volume change to be small enough that P is approximately constant during the process - this is also known as an isobaric process).

Solution

Here,

pressure , P = 102 kPa

P = 1.02 *10^5 Pa

VOlume , v1 = 96 cm^2

final volume , V2 = ( 1 - e) * v1

V2 = (1 - 0.3 * 10^-2) * 96

v2 = 95.712 cm^3

work done into the gas = P * (v2 - v1)

work done into the gas = 1.02 *10^5 * (96 - 95.712) * 10^-6

work done into the gas = 0.0295 J

the work done into the gas is 0.0295 J
