Determine the inductance L of a 0.40-m-long air-filled solenoid 3.0 cm in diameter containing 8200 loops.

Express your answer using two significant figures.

Solution

Inductance = L = µ_oAN²/l

where

L = inductance in henries (H)
µ_o = permeability of free space = 4 × 10⁷ H/m
N = number of turns = 8200 turns.
A = area of cross-section of the coil in square metres (m²) = *(0.03²) = 2.83*10^-3    m²
l = length of coil in metres (m) = 0.40 m

Hence   

L = 0.597 H
