Consider the cone z2 x2 y2 What is its intersection with z

Consider the cone z^2 + x^2 = y^2. What is it’s intersection with z = -2 plane? Show all equations used with full details and in set notation.
Consider the cone z^2 + x^2 = y^2. What is it’s intersection with z = -2 plane? Show all equations used with full details and in set notation.

Solution

The equation of the given cone is  z^2 + x^2 = y^2

When z=-2 we have:
(-2)2 + x2 = y2
y2 -x2 = 4;
This is the equation of a hyperbola
