Sociological phenomena are all around us. From the familiar social structures we create and inhabit in our day to day lives to the social problems that we care passionately about. Write a 300-500 word summary of a recent story, event, or social phenomena of your choosing, relating it to something we’ve covered in this class. Choose something that interests you that you think can be illuminated using some of the ideas we covered or will cover in this course.

STEP 1. CHOOSE TOPIC You may choose one of the following topics: o Social Deviance or Crime o Inequality of Wealth, Social Prestige, and Opportunity o Race and Ethnicity o Gender, Sex, or Sexuality o The Family o Or another such as education, economics, politics, or religion While I am suggesting you choose a topic from one of the last five chapters, if there was a topic we covered earlier in the course that you would like to write about that is okay too.

STEP 2. FIND SOURCE You should then choose something relating to that topic reported on in an article, book, or news report. It should be about a current event or a recent study concerning your chosen topic. All information you use should come from a reputable source. If you choose a book or chapter from a book, it should be from a reputable author and publisher. If you choose an article from a popular media outlet it should come from a respected periodical such as The New York Times, The Economist, The New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, etc. If you choose to discuss a research study make sure you report who did the research, where it was conducted and who reported on it. You MUST cite whatever source(s) you use, but I do not care which bibliographic style you use because they are basically all the same.

STEP 3. WRITE SUMMARY AND ANALYSIS Write a brief summary of the topic reported on in your source. Do not paraphrase or quote the source material. Explain the story to me in your own words. Then using the relevant concepts from the textbook or elsewhere as a guide, discuss how sociological ideas can provide a deeper understanding of the issues. How do you now look at this issue differently? (I don’t necessarily mean that you’ve changed your mind on the issue but whether you have changed the way you analyze the issue. Important note: Particularly if you are writing about controversial social issues, be careful to analyze the situation neutrally, without letting your own biases or opinions color your summary or analysis of the situation.

Social Deviance--According to Robert Merton, social deviance takes place during the chance of misbehavior of a person in society with inclination towards crime and injustice which isolates the person in the society.Further understanding is of the factors and circumstances which lead to crime taking place in society with the chances of specifically naming the persons in society with social deviance leading to trauma in these people along with social stigma.Accroding to the theory of Merton further, special circumstances and rules were created in society which led to the escape of criminals in society without punishment. The rules were so designed which further layed the foundation that the criminals were totally innocent and that crime was not performed by them due to lack of evidence, valid proof and eye-witness at the situation of crime.The discussion was further continued to reveal the rate of crime like robbery, theft in United States of America with the chance of accumulating more and more wealth without the acceptance of moral values and virtues of living in a proper society.Accroding to the studies of Chamlin and Cochran, a statistical survey was conducted on various groups of people accumulating wealth by indulging in criminal behavior, along with the study of suicidal rates in families, divorce rate in families for accumulating huge amounts of unclaimed wealth in society.Further studies by Krohn revealed the rates of delinquent and child criminal behavior is scoiety based on more social and network bonding among people leading to misguidance and indulgence in crime and misbehavior for the attainment of huge amounts of money and wealth in society.This had even adapted the form of social networking crime through the misuse of internet and computer servers.There are various forms of social deviation with reunion of criminals in society where the society forgives them for the crime after facing punishment and change their behavior towards society with repentance however in the other type there is disintegration of criminals in society with total indulgence in crime and destruction of mental thinking and perception of such criminals in society.

There are examples in newpapers and daily also everyday where criminals murder people in society near petrol pumps ,restaurants, cafetaria when they do not provide money even after strong tendency shown by criminals for offence in society.
