The first ova released for fertilization is called Menarche. It is the first complete menstrual cycle. It occurs at the ages of 8-15yrs. The last menstrual cycle occurs at ages between 45-55yrs. This is called menopause. In this time frame itself a women is capable of getting pregnant.
Each menstrual cycle lasts on an average of 21-35 days. Ideally, it is 28 days. It varies from person to person based on various external and internal factors.
Menstrual cycle contains the Follicular phase, Ovulation and Luteal phase. All these 3 phases occur in a time span of 28 days. Ovulation occurs 14 days before the first day of menstrual cycle. A sudden surge in Luteinizing Harmone matures the dormant ova nad releases it into the fallopian tube.
All the oocytes are arrested in prophase I of first meiotic division. Each egg matures a day before the ovulation. This is responsible for the window period in reproduction in women. The number of oocytes are predetermined before birth itself. Each oocyte matures every 28 days and is released. Once the ooctes are depleted, the owrson enters menopause stage. Whereas in males, the germinal epithelium of tesis is capable of producing unlimited number of spermatozoa throughout the life of the individual.
