Water enters a pump at 300K and 150 kPa and exits at 300K and 200 kPa. The flow rate is 3.5 kg/s. Estimate the shaft power required neglecting frictional effects as well as heat transfer effects. Include a sketch of the control volume.

Solution

>> As, Shaft Power Required, SP = (Pressure DIfference, dP)*Volumetric Flow Rate, Q

As, m = mass flow rate = 3.5 kg/s

and, as Q = Volumetric Flow Rate = m*Density = 3.5*1000 = 3500 m3/s

So, Shaft Power, SP = (200 - 150)*1000*3500

=> Shaft Power, SP = 175 MW .............ANSWER.........
