The molecule ADP can be converted into the molecule ATP by the addition of a phosphate group. Is the chemical reaction used to create the molecule of ATP endothermic or exothermic? Provide an explanation to support your answer.

Solution

ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, is created during a process called Oxidative phosphorylation.

for ADP to form into ATP, energy is required. Since energy is released from ATP when the bonds are broken, energy must be put back into the equation to form ATP from ADP and a phosphate molecule.

Energy in the body is formed when ATP is broken down into ADP. This reaction is therefore exothermic. Thus, the reverse reaction is going to be endothermic because energy is required in order to attach the phosphate to the ADP. Therefore conversuion of ADP to ATP is purely an Endothermic Reaction.
